Geeta Chopra National Bravery Award

Two Loreto Students, Tejasweeta Pradhan of Class XII and Shivani Gong of Class XI from Loreto Convent Darjeeling and St Teresa’s High School, Darjeeling respectively were awarded the Geeta Chopra National Bravery Award by the Prime Minister. They are members of the Students Against Trafficking Club and helped the NGO, Marg bust a human trafficking racket fearlessly participating in a sting operation. A third student Nina Rai from Loreto St Teresa’s HS Darjeeling was also part of the operation but did not qualify for the award as she was below the required age criteria of 18years.

Dr .Mithu Alur

Dr .Mithu Alur, is a past pupil of Loreto House. She is the founder chairperson of The Spastic Society of India - now rechristened ADAPT - Able Disable All People Together. She is a pioneer in the care and education of people with Neuro-Muscular and Developmental Disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome and mental retardation. She has been working in the slums of Mumbai and has recently finished a longitudinal research with UNICEF where she has created an Education For All model for 'all' children who are disadvantaged including the girl child, the disabled child and children in poverty, demonstrating that inclusive education can happen anywhere including the poorest places. In 1989 the Government of India awarded her with the Padma Shri Award

Dr. Reena Sen

A founder member of the organisation that started its activities as the West Bengal Spastics Society, Dr. Sen is an alumna of Loreto House. She also obtained a B.Ed degree from Loreto College, where she was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Commendable Achievement given to the Highest Scorer in the Class. She has a PhD, MA and PG Diploma (Education) from the University of London. She has worked intensively in the classroom with children with cerebral palsy with varying degrees of abilities. Dr Sen is presently the Executive Director of IICP. She lived in Kochi from 1984-1987 where she founded Raksha, an NGO that continues to thrive as a nodal centre for disability in Kerala. In 2006, Dr Sen was awarded the ABLENET-ISAAC Literacy Award for her work with individuals who have severe speech and physical impairments .In 2016 she was invited as Expert in Residence to the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, USA, by the Community for Global Health Equity to mentor an Innovation Challenge focused on multidisciplinary approaches to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for all, with particular emphasis on girls and students with disability.

She is completing her first book, entitled “A History of Money in Palestine: From the 1900s to the Present.” Her work examines the economic and monetary dimensions of statelessness. Ritika Sen is an alumnus of Loreto House, Kolkata. Having studied at Loreto House since the age of five and finishing in 2001, she continued on to Presidency College, Kolkata for a B.A in Political Science and graduated from the London School of Economics in the UK with an MSc in International Relations. She secured her first job at Lehman Brothers in London where she entered their prestigious Graduate Programme. Ritika next made a transition to the Japanese investment bank, Nomura. She later became a full-time entrepreneur, and with two ex-colleagues from Nomura, established BitSpread Ltd, a start-up company in London. Ritika recently featured in the UK’s ‘Women in Fintech Powerlist’ 2016 UK.
